about

In the beginning was the sound. No, that's not quite right. In the beginning was the rhythm. Well, maybe that's not it, either. In the beginning was the word - not "the Word" but the first word Dave Tilton wrote for what became a series of poems that he later stashed for - wait, maybe in the beginning was the letter? The blank sheet of paper? The pen? Word software? The laptop? It's difficult to say.

Just know that Dave has recorded a collection of poems, his first one after forty years of solo singer-songwriter albums and as a member of the SoCal band the Seventh Triangle. Poems about topics like a former US President playing golf in 2021, an iconic octogenarian rock star listening to Miles Davis albums on vinyl in his house, a narrator experiencing the onset of dementia and remembering a long-ago Creedence concert while trying to figure out what is in the gutter near his house, even one using the nadsat language created by Anthony Burgess for his novel A Clockwork Orange.

And then there's the album's centerpiece: a series of poems created by cutting up photocopies of the text from Chapters 3-6 of The Gospel According to Luke into two-inch squares, picking eight squares at random from a hat, then choosing lines from the squares to reassemble the text into something new.

Dave also wrote and played the music used to back these poems. Well, not really "backed" or "supported" - his voice was used like another instrument in the band, similar to what not-really-Beat poet Kenneth Rexroth (Rexroth's description) did on Fantasy Records in the 1950s. This collection is no Fifties Hipster Retro Thingy, though. It's in-the-moment stuff with some snappy rhythms, some walking basslines, and - well, here is where you should stop reading and begin listening. Maybe even dancing.
